Credit Profile

Credit profiles and histories are maintained at credit bureaus. There are three main national credit bureaus in the United States: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Creditors and lenders submit whatever credit-related information to these credit bureaus. Sometimes to each of the bureaus, sometimes just to one bureau.

It is good practice to periodically review one's credit profile to check for errors and for unauthorized credit activity. Having an accurate and well managed credit profile will lead to a good credit score. Credit scores are used by creditors to evaluate creditworthiness and to determine interest rates. Good, or high credit scores, generally lead to favorable lending terms.
